Designed in 1955–56 by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen, the Tulip Chair was part of his revolutionary Pedestal Collection for Knoll. Seeking to eliminate the “slum of legs” found under traditional tables and chairs, Saarinen crafted the chair with a single, sculptural aluminum base and molded fiberglass shell. Its futuristic, organic form epitomized mid-century modern design and quickly became iconic. The Tulip Chair was one of the first to blend modern materials with functional elegance, and it remains a design classic, featured in museums and homes worldwide. Its influence endures in contemporary furniture and popular culture alike.
