The Saarinen Womb Chair was designed in 1946 by Eero Saarinen at the request of Florence Knoll, who wanted a chair that felt like “a basket full of pillows.” Knoll sought a design that offered both comfort and modern style—something that would support various sitting positions and encourage relaxation. Saarinen responded by creating a revolutionary form using molded fiberglass and foam upholstery, which cradled the body in a comforting, womb-like enclosure. Its innovative, organic shape and emphasis on comfort marked a departure from traditional rigid seating, helping define mid-century modern design and human-centered functionality in furniture.
