The original Eames Fiberglass Arm Shell Chair was designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1948 for the Museum of Modern Art’s “International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design.” The chair featured an innovative molded fiberglass-reinforced shell, offering comfort, durability, and mass-producibility. Produced by Herman Miller beginning in 1950, it was the first industrially manufactured fiberglass chair. Its organic form and adaptability—mountable on various bases—made it a design icon. Initially crafted using a process developed with Zenith, the chair reflected post-war advances in materials and technology, influencing modern furniture design profoundly and remaining in production, now in eco-friendly materials.
